Home Theater

With the price of movie tickets up over $10, home theaters have become an increasingly popular item. A home theater is essentially a theater installed in the privacy of your own home. It can be a room that is dedicated specifically for that purpose or it could be implemented in a common area such as a family room or even a master bedroom.

A home theater consists of a video display, speakers, a subwoofer, a multi-channel amplifier, a surround sound processor, an audio video source, such as a DVD player, and a universal remote control. It is most commonly configured as a 5.1 or 7.1 system. The five and the seven refer to the number of speakers and the one refers to the number of subwoofers. In a 5.1 system there is one center channel speaker, two front channel speakers, two side surround channel speakers and one subwoofer. A 7.1 system adds a pair of rear surround channel speakers. The amplifier powers the speakers and the surround sound processor decodes the digital audio track from the audio source and sends the output to the amplifier. The universal remote control is used to simplify the operation of the system. What we have just described is the basic system. The only limits to what you can do in a home theater is your imagination.

The quality level of a home theater has a very wide range. Drawing an analogy with automobiles, you could buy a Yugo or a BMW M5 or, if you hit the lottery, even a Lamborghini. All of them have four wheels, brakes and a steering wheel. But I think that you'll agree that there is a big difference between each one.
